Dealing with stress – Talk at Hirsch’s Networking Breakfast

This month Hirsch’s Centurion’s popular monthly  networking breakfast was addressed by  Dr. Arien van der Merwe, Director of Health Stress Management Gauteng and author of the book Stress Solutions.  Dr. Arien highlighted the fact that stress has a very negative effect on our bodies.  She discussed the balance between work, a healthy work environment and lifestyle and the importance of regular and healthy meals. 

She explained the different feel good foods like banana’s, hot peppers, sesame and pumpkin seeds to mention a few.  She also said  that vegetables and fruit  regulate blood sugar and assists with your mood.  Everyone should have between 10 and 20 minutes sun light every day, preferably early morning or late afternoon.  Regular exercise will help prevent heart attacks and the importance of taking time meditating and relaxing our bodies to combat stress. 

Dr. Arien also explained that people must learn to manage their relationships, make time to meet people and socialise - a basic human need.  It is important to socialise, laugh, enjoy togetherness, love and laughter.  People need to do this to have a balanced and healthy lifestyle.  She explained how our thoughts have an important role to play in how we feel, the impact on our bodies and how negative thoughts affect your immune system and the whole body. Your positive thoughts affect your heart, lungs and  your whole body. Your thoughts have a big impact on your life and you become how you think.  Dr. Arien said.  She ended her talk with a small meditation exercise.

Speed networking followed where everyone who attended being given a chance to introduce themselves and their business.
