October was another great month for Hirsch’s Centurion’s Business Networking Breakfast, with Juan Quinn, an internet and social media consultant from Above and Beyond Concepts, speaking about Digital Marketing- the business side of social media.

Juan started off with a very interesting fact; he explained that according to research, 90% of people will go for a product or service that has been recommended to them as opposed to advertising they see. Social media is the conversation between people using the internet so it allows people to share their opinions on just about anything.

Juan shared some tips to help people utilise the web to its fullest potential. Firstly, register your business’s email address- it looks much more professional having your business name as part of your email address, rather than using a Gmail or Yahoo address. Get traffic to your website by doing a lot of blogging about your business, having your business page on social media sites, buying web adverts and finally search engine optimisation, which is basically ensuring that you use the right keywords so that people find your site first when they are searching the web.

Juan focused on Facebook specifically, as this is the most popular social networking site with 50 million users in Africa alone. He gave three important tips to business owners; firstly get a Facebook page for your business, not a profile. A Facebook page can have an unlimited amount of ‘Likes’, whereas a Facebook profile has a limit of 5000 friends. Secondly, build up your business page’s ‘Likes’, this enables more people to share the business information with their Facebook friends. And lastly, ensure that you update your business page regularly with appealing news and photographs so that people stay interested in what your business has to offer.

Social media is the way of the future for businesses and Juan recommended that businesses take advantage of as many social media sites as possible, build a relationship with customers and get their names out there.
