Job Applicant Selection Process using Handwriting Analysis 

The employer has the right, and the duty to monitor an employee’s performance. This means that an employer has the right to get relevant evidence about how well an employee is likely to perform before an employee begins at his job. An employer has the right to determine beforehand whether an employee possesses the right skills and capacities to be effective in the job or promotion the employee is applying for.

In the Security Industry, it is of the utmost importance that the security manager knows who he is hiring, and to get the relevant information about how an employee is likely to perform and behave before he/she begins his/her job as a security guard. Hiring and promoting of security guards usually involves much more important characteristics than the usual straight forward characteristics. The security guard has to be reliable, honest, must have integrity, the ability to get along with co-workers and customers, and so on. These characteristics in the security guards are the cornerstone of a successful security company. Mistakes about these characteristics can be very costly. There is always the worry that one may be unfair or make a mistake about judging a job applicant by means of an interview, letters of recommendation, or any other subjective criteria. 

How does Handwriting analysis work? 

With Handwriting analysis you can create an accurate personality profile from just a page of handwriting. It is a scientific examination of the strokes and impulses that are transmitted directly from the brain via the motor neuron system to the hand holding the pen. The writing strokes are directly influenced by the state of mind at the time of writing and the inherent personality of the writer. It is thus a complex study of the arrangement, form and movement of writing blended with the psychology of human behavior. It is the written externalization of the vibrant activity going on inside you.  Accurately measured handwriting factors are combined with the art of interpretation resulting in a complete personality profile. Symbolism of the arrangement on the page, the form used by the writer and the movement that carries the pen across the page are important facets of handwriting analysis. A person’s attitude and feelings, his health, medication or drugs he uses and other internal and external factors influence the formations of his handwriting. Just to mention a few traits that are important clues that handwriting analysts look for in a handwriting sample:

All of these and a lot of other features in the handwriting are evaluated and interpreted to make up the final portrait. Handwriting is as individual as a fingerprint, and in many subtle ways unique to the writer. Handwriting can reveal many deeply hidden secrets, and can:

Reveal how the writer relates to other people – is the writer friendly or reserved, social or antisocial, aggressive or submissive? Reveal how the writer thinks – is the writer logical or intuitive? Does he create his own new ideas, or is he afraid to generate his own new ideas? Reveal the writer’s state of ego – is it strong and well developed, or is it weak and battered? Handwriting tells about the writer’s fears and inhibitions – what he has learned from his past experiences, and how he uses that knowledge: will he learn from painful experiences and put the lesson to use the next time, or will he repress it and pretend it never happened, repeating the same mistakes over and over again? Reveal how the writer uses his energy. Does he tire easily, have low vitality and stamina, or can he work all day and party all night without feeling the strain? Reveal how the writer controls himself. Is the writer controlled by the past? Does he still carry old childhood messages in his head, feeling if someone were peering over his shoulder telling him what to do every minute? Has he learned self discipline? Does he understand the difference between what is right and wrong in a mature adult fashion?  

 

How will Handwriting Analysis help with the job application selection process? 

In the selection of personnel, handwriting analysis is an invaluable tool for helping to choose the most suitable person for the job. It is also useful in existing job situations where major personality differences can have an adverse effect on employer - employee interaction as well as on the managerial staff itself. For the purpose of personnel selection, handwriting can reveal whether an applicant has what it takes to do the job. Handwriting analysis reveals: 

Handwriting analysis can reveal if the applicant has sufficient will- power and drive to be able to achieve what it takes to do the job he is applying for. Handwriting analysis will reveal if the applicant has any hidden or latent talents. Weaknesses can be identified in an uncritical manner. Handwriting analysis will reveal how well the applicant relates to other people, either in crowds or on a one to one basis. Handwriting analysis will show if the applicant has a tendency to run away from his difficulties, or if he has the ability to challenge them head-on, or does he become overly defensive or even aggressive. Handwriting analysis will show if the applicant has the strength of character, the determination and ability to apply his talents to his goals in life. Handwriting analysis will quickly show if a writer is dogmatic and dictatorial, emotionally unstable, bad tempered and possibly even violent. Handwriting analysis will reveal tendencies towards secrecy, deception, self-deception and excessive fantasy. Handwriting analysis will reveal possible addictions. Handwriting analysis will reveal levels of stress. Handwriting Analysis reveals the level of integrity.  Handwriting Analysis reveals leadership and executive skills. Handwriting Analysis reveals communication skills.

 Graphological assessment compared to other types of assessment: 

Handwriting analysis can be done whether the graphologist understands the language of the writer or not.  Handwriting Analysis cannot determine: age, race, religion or gender and is not influenced by appearance, positive self reporting and attempts to portray a positive image, which therefore reduces the subjectivity factor of the technique. A significant cause for concern in the use of conventional personality tests, is the ability to fake in the test by means of:

      ·         Prior coaching for the test

·         The predictability factor in the test

·         Interviews make it easy for the prospective employee to respond ‘appropriately’.

Faking is almost impossible with graphology as the applicant is unable to control the brain impulses which are projected on paper, nor is he aware of how to manipulate the writing. Any attempt to change the writer’s normal handwriting would be easily identified by a technically trained and experienced graphologist who examines more than 300 graphological features within a sample of writing before developing a composite profile of the writer: van Rooij JJ, Hazelzet AM., 1997, ‘Graphologists' assessment of extraversion compared with assessment by means of a psychological test’. Finally: 

Handwriting Analysis (Graphology) is a degree course in Italy, Spain and Argentina. It is used successfully, as a matter of course in 78% of job application procedures across Europe, 30% in the USA (also for Jury Selection) 11% in the UK, and then also in Israel, India, Australia and New Zealand.

Methods of personnel selection with its strict nondiscriminatory regulations, brings with it its own complexities.  For the human resources manager therefore, the problem of objectivity continues to be a problem in personnel selection.

Making use of a Handwriting Analysis could bring the employer closer to selecting the best applicant for a position or promotion.
